Activists statewide will demand that New York State ban fracking, in a day of action on May 3, with events scheduled from Long Island to Buffalo.
A local demonstration will take place at North Hempstead's Town Dock in Port Washington beginning at noon. Activists will literally spell out a message to elected officials, "BAN FRACKING NOW."
Food & Water Watch, which is one of the groups that has been most active on Long Island, rallied support with an April 23 meeting aimed at putting pressure on Senator Jack Martins to sponsor legislation banning hydrofracking, permanently.
"We presented 2600 petitions from Martins’ constituents, asking him that he support S4220A – the current legislation in Senate to ban fracking in NY," said Sam Bernhardt, Long Island organizer for Food & Water Watch. "We have also signed up over 70 local small businesses, community groups, religious organizations and leaders onto a letter asking Senator Martins to take action and co-sponsor bill to ban fracking. We need him to be a hero on this issue and ban fracking.
